What is p20?

p20 is a manufacturing credit program for indie board game designers, built for the year Panda turns twenty.

Twenty designers will be selected by Gen Con 2027, with manufacturing credits from $2,000 to $20,000 toward producing their winning game with Panda. You don’t wait until the end to find out: winners are selected in quarterly cohorts, and fast-tracked designers get $2,000 of their credit to use immediately.

Top tier judges

Every submission is evaluated by the Panda team, and the finalists go in front of two of the most respected names in tabletop.

How the panel works:
The Panda Team will review and assess each game based on:

  • Creativity & Engagement
  • Market Viability
  • Production Feasibility
  • Overall Presentation Quality

Shortlisted designers move on to a conversation with our team, then a final review by the guest judges.

Tom Vasel · p20 Guest Judge

Founder of The Dice Tower, and one of the most influential voices in the industry. With over two decades of experience reviewing tabletop games, Tom knows what makes a great game.

Ben Rosset · p20 Guest Judge

The award winning game designer behind such hits as The Search for Planet X,  Fromage, Between Two Cities, and Brew Crafters, Ben now leads Bamboo Design Studio.

The Panda team

Panda team members come from various backgrounds all around the globe, but we are all tabletop gamers dedicated to making (and playing!) the best games in the industry.

20 Winning Designers

All prizes are credits toward a production run with Panda Game Manufacturing. Total pool: $110,000 in manufacturing credits, from $2,000 up to the $20,000 grand prize.

And the prize we’re most excited about: the factory trip. We will fly the first-place designer to our facility in Shenzhen, China to meet our production team and see games being made firsthand.

The first fast-tracked designers are in

These are the designers who scored highest and earned fast-track status, with $2,000 in manufacturing credit each, usable now.
They all stay in the running for the higher tiers, decided at Gen Con 2027. Up to four more designers will be fast-tracked next cohort. Yours could be one of them.

How it works, start to finish

  1. Submit anytime through May 2027: one game, sell sheet + video + rulebook.
  2. Every qualified submission gets a real conversation with the Panda team, online or in person at a convention.
  3. Your entry is scored out of 25 across five categories (see “What we look for” below).
  4. Quarterly selections: cohorts close on August 20, November 20, February 20, and May 31. Score 20 or above and you’re fast-tracked, up to 4 designers per quarter. Your entry competes in the cohort in which its evaluation completes, so applying early never hurts and booking late never penalizes you.
  5. Fast-tracked designers get $2,000 in manufacturing credit immediately, with the balance of their final prize decided at the reveal.
  6. Four more designers are selected at large across the year.
  7. Mid-2027: guest judges Tom Vasel and Ben Rosset help select the top 10 from the finalists.
  8. Gen Con 2027: all 20 winners of the $110,000 pool are revealed, including the $20,000 grand prize.

The right time to apply is whenever your game is ready.

How to enter

Open to indie designers with two or fewer published games. One submission per designer. Submissions close May 2027.

Submit the form below and include:

  • Sell Sheet (PDF): a one-page document summarizing the game, including its theme, mechanics, player count, playtime, and unique selling points.
  • Video Overview & Quick Play (10 minutes maximum): a short video about you as a designer, your game, its mechanics, and why it stands out. Include a demonstration of core gameplay and player interaction in 1 to 2 rounds.
  • Complete Rules (PDF): blind-tested rulebook that allows a new reader to learn and play the game without additional guidance. Must be in English.

Once qualified, you’ll have a conversation with our team: online if that suits you, or in person at one of the conventions we’re at across the year (Gen Con, Spiel, PAX Unplugged, DiceCon, Diversão Offline, Roll a Game, Unpub, UKGE).

What we look for

Every entry is scored out of 25 across five categories:

  • Long-Term Partnership Fit (30%): p20 is about designers we want to build with for years, not just one game. Do you have a vision beyond this title, and does Panda fit in it?
  • Game Design (20%): Is the game fun? What makes it stand out? What will keep players coming back?
  • Business Plan (20%): Will it sell at a price that works? Do you understand your manufacturing cost against what players will pay? (Use our free estimator to get a head start.)
  • Marketing (20%): Is there an audience for this game, and have you started building it? What’s the plan to reach it?
  • Mobility (10%): How ready are the game and the designer to actually reach production? Playtested design, clear rules, a realistic path to manufacturing within eighteen months.

None of this needs to be perfect or final. The more complete a vision you share, the easier it is for our judges to see it too.

Why we built this

Panda has been manufacturing tabletop games since 2007. Indies have been our customers the entire time and we’ve learned where the actual bottleneck is. It’s not the design. It’s not the playtesting. It’s the moment a first-time designer gets their first manufacturing quote and the math stops working.

p20 is us moving twenty designers past that math for the year we turn twenty.
The last version of this we ran was called 25 in 25. It worked. We learned what to keep, what to drop, where designers were getting confused.
p20 is the rebuilt version.

Common questions

Who is eligible to enter?

p20 is built for indie designers early in their journey – specifically, designers with two or fewer published games. We’re defining “published” as commercially released titles, whether through a publisher, self-publishing, or a successfully fulfilled crowdfunding campaign. Print-and-play, prototypes, and unreleased designs don’t count toward the limit. Each designer may submit one game. Co-designed games are welcome, but the lead designer’s eligibility is what we’ll use to evaluate the submission.

No. p20 is a manufacturing sponsorship. Your IP and your publishing path stay with you.

Yes, absolutely!

Yes. p20 is global. Legal age in your country is the only geographic constraint.

Rulebook tested, prototype playable enough to walk a new reader through. We’d like to see your game, even if it’s not fully polished yet.

Tell us. We handle it case by case. We’re not in the business of penalizing good news.

As production credits applied towards your Panda manufacturing quote.

Fast: you’ll get a confirmation right away, then a qualification check, then an invitation to book your evaluation conversation. Results come at the end of the quarterly cohort in which your evaluation completes (cohorts close August 20, November 20, February 20, and May 31).

Entries scoring 20 or above out of 25 are fast-tracked, up to 4 designers per quarter. Fast-tracked designers receive $2,000 of their manufacturing credit immediately and remain in the running for the higher prize tiers revealed at Gen Con 2027.

No. Every entry that passes evaluation stays in the running for the 4 at-large selections made across the year and for the final 20 revealed at Gen Con 2027. There’s nothing you need to do to stay in.
